Nicole and Seth’s wedding, captured by the awesome by Llanes Weddings , is BY FAR one of the most amazing DIY affairs I’ve ever laid eyes on! I love every last detail, but the ceremony set-up is the true show stopper. It’s unbelievably beautiful and I’m completely obsessed!!!
The exposed wood beams and dilapidated brick walls, the soft fabric draping, the dreamy garlands, the jutting tree branches- sheer perfection! I could really go on and on, but instead I’ll shut up so you can take a look for yourself:)
More from the Bride, Nicole…
My husband Seth and I are naturally crafty, artsy people so even though there was the stress of figuring out how to make everything work, it was a fun stress because we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted….as long as we could make it ourselves.
A friend with her wholesale license did the flowers and another friend who is an event planner served as my “Day-of” coordinator….a HUGE blessing and something I would definitely reccommend!
Seth is a set designer and so he found the location while scouting for a photo shoot job. This turned out great for our budget because it had never been used for a wedding so it wasn’t priced as such. We were able to rent it for three days at a real bargain. We wanted something with a rustic and deteriorating look so the real beauty of the wedding would be emphasized in the people, flowers and the spiritual act of becoming man and wife– so everything was tailored around that theme.
The bittersweet side to our venue was that it was completely bare, so we had to bring everything in. We rented the tables, chairs and champagne glasses, but everything else we found, borrowed from friends or made ourselves. We went to the fabric district here in LA and were able to haggle for two huge rolls of fabric. From that we made all our tablecloths and ceremony draping. I looked at blogs everyday for fun DIY ideas, and was able to come up with the fabric flower garlands that my mom selflessly spent days making. My mom also shipped leaves in from Ohio that we scattered around the altar, and the tree branches were actually a last minute find of Seth’s during his bachelor party!
I made all the groomsman boutonnieres. I actually had so much fun making them, I opened my own Etsy shop to continue doing it!
For dinner we had a food truck come in, which was much cheaper than going with a catering company and they provided all the utensils and clean-up. It was also fun for the guests to be able to create their own dish. I happened to have a friend from work starting up her own catering business, and so she offered to make all the cupcakes and appetizers.
The centerpiece paper flowers were made from tissue and magazine paper.
Everyone always says that you never remember any of it, so in a minor act of rebellion I told myself I would make SURE to take in three very special moments. Those were when I first saw Seth waiting for me at the altar, when I had my first dance with my dad, and when we had our first dance as man and wife. I’ll never forget how perfect it felt to finally be able to belong to him forever.
All in all…. it truly was a labor of love that had our personality written all over it. I think that is what is really special about DIY weddings. From the very beginning we knew that we didn’t want something that looked cookie-cutter. We have so many wonderful, talented friends that had supported us while we were dating, we really wanted their talents to be a part of our wedding day, too.
My advice to brides planning now would be to really ENJOY wedding planning. Decide what you like, what you don’t like, then go from there. It’s true the day goes by really fast, but remember that you are planning for a marriage and not just a wedding, so delight in every step along the way. It’s all part of your life together. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, either! Keyword to our wedding = friends!
